Hey Everybody,

Today, we’re going to talk about how to make your Jab work in sparring.

With this article, I’m going to give you a set of drills that will make your Jab absolutely terrifying.

When you first start Boxing, the Jab is one of the very first things you’ll learn; but, it’s also one of the most frustrating techniques to master.

The Jab is so frustrating because it seems so simple; yet, it’s so difficult to functionalize.

Let’s just say for now that you totally know how to execute the Jab perfectly.

You know how to keep your elbows in.  You know how to throw the Jab non-telegraphically and you know that you need to keep your right hand up.

If you’re a little shaky on the basic form for the Jab, be sure to check out my earlier article here on the proper way to throw the perfect Jab.

Let’s start off with a Beginner level drill. It’s called “Jab in 3’s”.

This is done with a slow, easy pace and I often use this drill as a warm up for my Boxing Sparring classes.

You should do the Jab in 3’s drill for at least three or four 2 min rounds.  While switching partners each time.

The Jab in 3’s drill will not only put heat into your muscles so that you’re warmed up for Sparring but it’ll also get your eye’s ready to see punches coming at your head.

Now the Jab in 3’s drill is made more difficult at the intermediate level because we’re now going to randomize our Jabs.

By randomizing the Jab, you’ll be constantly aware and ready to defend your training partner’s Jab only if they throw it.

Now, at the advanced level, we’re now going to randomize WHEN you can counter attack with the Jab.

Here’s a bit of terminology I use in the video.

Counter Timing #1: Hitting on the RETRACTION of the Jab.

Counter Timing #2: Hitting DURING the execution of the Jab.

The Jab in 3’s drill will almost feel like sparring now. This will help you functionalize your Jab and keep you safe from counter attacks by constantly having you aware of getting hit.

Okay, so now we’re going to pull everything together with a highly advanced version of the Jab drill.

This is a super crazy advanced drill to help you make your Jab into a precision carving knife of doom.

It incorporates pretty much everything except for spitting and name calling.

What we’re doing is now we’re faking with our Jab.  If you’re throwing fakes in sparring; then, you’re sparring at an advanced level.

You always want to keep your training partner guessing.  Is it a real Jab or is a fake Jab.

This drill will make your Jab incredibly dangerous.  Watch it below.

So there you have it.

The rest is up to you.

Practice these drills regularly and diligently and I promise your sparring will improve.

I hope this was helpful.
