Kickboxing is often viewed as a male dominated form of exercise. The sport of mixed martial arts definitely supports this claim, as the majority of participants are in fact male. This was the trend and it seemed as though that was just how it was going to be.
The New Trend
Over the past couple of years there has been a lot of momentum gained for women participating in mixed martial arts. The trend really kicked off when numerous celebrities announced that they (and their trainers) have turned to kickboxing as the primary form of exercise to keep them healthy and in shape.
The list goes on an on including Angelina Jolie, Ashley Greene, Lauren Conrad, Eva Mendes, Marissa Miller, Queen Latifah, Stacey Kiebler, Hilary Swank (who btw gained an impressive 20 pounds of muscle for Million Dollar Baby), Denise Richards, Tiffani Thiessen, Michelle Pfeifer, … you get the idea.
Celebrities get the best of the best when it comes to their fitness and health. Why do they choose kickboxing?
Kickboxing for Women in Vancouver
The team at InFighting Training Centers is here to help you understand why kickboxing for women is an empowering way to get in shape, lose weight and burn fat.
Our current member base is over 50% females. This is by far the most female friendly martial arts school in Vancouver, BC. This is ultimately the result of the InFighting team atmosphere, but also because more and more women are realizing the benefits of kickboxing.
The Benefits of InFighting’s Vancouver Kickboxing Classes
1) Save Time with Efficient Training
Perhaps one of the most important benefits is the amount of time saved! A one hour kickboxing class is believed to burn around 750 calories and triggers a calorie after-burn (which keeps your body burning calories even hours after your session at the gym). It happens all the time where a workout routine contains too much cardio or has 15-20 minutes of abdominal isolation. This is not the most efficient method of training.
At InFighting we have a formula where every class teaches an effective self defense skill, but maintaining a cardio workout at the same time.
2) Learn Self Defense – Be Prepared
Self defense is another reason why kickboxing for women is so beneficial. Every class is different in demonstrating how to properly throw punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. It is one thing to know how to attack, but it is almost more important to understand the technical aspects of evading and distancing… or defense as a whole. This brings up the concern that lots of people have when joining a kickboxing class.
“True kickboxing requires me getting hit??” is not an entirely true quote. Of course the most practical method of practicing is through sparring. Sparring would involve you getting hit and your training partner being hit, so yes that is part of true kickboxing. With that being said, sparring is not required to experience the benefits of kickboxing.
Aerobic kickboxing involves throwing punches and kicks set to music, but is not entirely beneficial to learning self defense. This is where InFighting’s balanced formula of learning the kickboxing techniques along with cardio implementation are extremely effective.

3) Training in a Team Environment
It is not uncommon to feel intimidated and scared. Not just when it comes to fitness, but in general. Who isn’t intimidated to start something new?! What helps in this situation is choosing a school that is overly aware of this fact and puts a lot of emphasis on the team environment and ensuring that safety and having fun are top priority.
4) Aerobic Effects
After a class you will be sure to notice muscles that you did not even think you had. The aerobic effect is achieved in all of InFighting Training Center’s kickboxing classes in the sense that all major muscle groups are used; thus, increasing oxygen requirements by the body and, with the increased heart rate, ultimately results in improved cardiovascular conditioning. Kickboxing increases strength, tones muscles, reduces fat, increases flexibility, burns calories and improves coordination.
5) Mental Empowerment
Kickboxing, above and beyond the amazing physical benefits, has numerous mental benefits as well. Vancouver kickboxing for women is extremely empowering. Just getting in and starting a kickboxing class allows you to feel courageous and confident. Imagine the inner strength and courage you’d feel once you start grasping the techniques.
6) Self Confidence
The sense of achievement and self confidence would be through the roof in no time! There is something cool and sexy about a woman that can kick butt.
7) Reduces Stress
Imagine you are having a rough day: stuck in traffic, nothing is going right at work, somebody said something that makes your blood boil, all sorts of stress is building and then it is time to get a work out in. Kickboxing is one of the best stress reducers. Working out reduces stress in general, but that effect is increased substantially as soon as you can hit stuff in a fun and safe environment!
We’re Open to All Skill Levels
At InFighting Training Centers we are open to all skill levels and understand that teaching relatively dangerous techniques must be attained through a safe and proper manner, while ensuring that it is still enjoyable and an effective work out. Not all schools prioritize this aspect and simply run potentially dangerous training drills and let students figure out the issues on their own. The quality of the instructor is one of the most important factors when choosing a place to train kickboxing.
What to Expect
Alright, so now you’ve built up the courage to try out a kickboxing class. You have found a place you want to train but you’re not sure what to expect from your workout. Well, kickboxing is one of the most rounded workouts on the planet.
Don’t Give Up
At InFighting Training Centers, we feel it is important to keep expectations realistic. It is not uncommon to develop frustration when starting anything new. Kickboxing is no different. It can be overwhelming at first and totally frustrating; but so is learning anything for the first time.
Remember when you first learned how to drive. It was scary. It felt weird to parallel park. You thought everybody was watching you and judging you. But what did you do? Give up? No way. You just kept going and you kept practicing and eventually you mastered the art of driving a car and now a car just feels like an extension of your body. You don’t even think about it- you just jump in your car and go.
Learning how to drive takes a bit of time and can feel overwhelming. Kickboxing is no different. Not getting frustrated is one of the most important aspects to learning kickboxing.
What Should I Bring to Train?
Kickboxing does not require a lot of equipment. All you need is cool and dry unrestrictive clothing, boxing gloves and boxing hand wraps. At InFighting we do our best to make this as simple as possible. We have gloves that can be used for trial and offer a free pair of brand new gloves and wraps to students when they purchase a membership. A water bottle is also encouraged to rehydrate during class.
Saving time by getting an intense full body workout in an hour is reason alone for a lot of busy women these days to choose kickboxing. The added bonus of increasing self-confidence and self-possession all while learning self-defense skills in a fun and safe manner are icing on the cake. Increasing strength, endurance, balance and coordination are just some of the physical benefits to highlight from a kickboxing class. All in all, there are numerous reasons why more and more women are choosing kickboxing to stay in shape.
Perhaps one of the most influential women to turn her focus on kickboxing and martial arts is Miss USA 2012 Whitney Miller. Whitney Miller is humanizing what appears to most as a vicious sport. She is partaking in jiu-jitsu tournaments and ultimately wants to get into the UFC octagon one day. Even Miss USA was affected by gym boredom and turned to kickboxing and martial arts for a more fulfilling workout.
